For selecting the right keywords and phrases you should not depend only on one tool must go through multiple tools like SERPAnalytics , Spyfu , Keywordspy etc.
This will give you the multiple choices and you will have good amount of data to come on conclusion.

from my experience which is lots lol - if you want the best up to date information on googles keywords use secockpit - they are tied into SEmoz and super fast + lots more cool features - its pretty expensive though if you are new and are just starting out

tip: you should learn how to do proper keyword research first - practice using free methods until you get a hang of it and learn how to find keywords you can rank for plus keywords that will bring you the best targeted traffic - also make sure you know how to find LSI keywords (secondary keywords that are related to your primary keyword) also make sure you can rank for those keywords and that they will bring you more targeted traffic related to your niche market

second tip: make sure you know how to do proper market research - that is finding data on your target market such as what is new and what people are looking for + geographic area + see what people are talking about and what products are converting in that market and whats selling and whats not so you can base your keyword research from this data - this helps you plan and map out your sales funnel and helps you create a strategy for your backlinking campaigns and social media campaigns :)

    hope that helps

oh one more thing secockpit costs like 70 usd per month - i use this tool for my research + other tools :)

Market Samurai is great. For everything that MS doesn't do, Keyword Scout can do. You don't need any more than 2 tools.

I personally use Market Samurai. I like the fact that you can do your keywords research, your tracking and all sorts of other functions in one place. It's not the best, but it's quicker than having to jump around between tools, copy/paste, etc. and time is money!

The best keyword research methods I've seen and used can be found at source-wave.com for free. Alex Becker shows you how to THINK when using Google. Killer stuff and it's free. That's my 2¢. :)

The best keyword tools is the your brain, interm of what " seed keyword " you are imputing in any of these tools to generate keyword for you. They are all pulling data from Google keyword tool.

You should first try using Google AdWords since it's free, just for practice. What is important in keyword look up is how to do it properly, otherwise the effort you put into it will be for naught. You could watch tutorials on how to do them, you can search for these tutorials online. However, since it is FREE, there are only a few parameters for research basis. Once you get the hang of it, you can try Market Samurai or Cyber Niche Finder. I personally find them worthwhile.

The best keyword tool in my opinion is Google Adwords keyword Tool. You just need to play around with it a little. The other tools being sold out there have never worked properly for me.
